Rat Crew Rattery's Breeding Program

Our breeding goals and the varieties and colors we breed

Main goal:
Breeding for great health, longevity, conformation, and outstanding temperaments with all animals.

My first goal is first and foremost Health. If a rat has an Upper respiratory flare up or excessive sneezing, then it will not be used in my breeding program. If a line has 2 rats with Tumors in it, then that line will be ended. If Mega Colon shows up even once, the line will be ended. With Health also come longevity.

My second goal is temperaments. I will not breed an animal that bites. or is aggressive with other cage mates. I aim to breed only the best tempered rats. My rats are outstanding in this department ^__^ When picking them up they go limp and trust you completely. When in your hands they just sit there and enjoy the view and will even give you kisses. When being snuggled and petted, if you hit the right spot they will brux and eye boggle like crazy.

My next goal is conformation. I am currently working to breed out the silvering, and top ears. After the top ears are gone I will be working on the shape of the dumbo's ears as well as placement.

My last goal is Coloring. I am aiming to breed out all markings and create nice solid colored rats in Fawn, Siamese, Agouti, Beige. Mink and Pearls. I want to darken the points in my color point line.

Size

Picture
Regular: Adult Rats can grow up to 11+ inches. And just like with humans, they range in size, but not too drastically. These are the rats that get shown at shows.
Picture
Dwarf: Dwarfs are currently not showable and the size difference is drastic. Dwarfs are generally 1/3 the size of their Regular counter parts, are HIGHLY energetic but have the same great personalities as their Bigger relatives. They just come in a MUCH smaller package :)

We currently do not have any Dwarfs at this time.

Ears

Picture
Top eared:Well-formed oval shape of medium size, they should be upright and spaced
well apart.

Faults: Creases or folds, ears set too low or too far apart.

Picture
Dumbo: Ears to be large, round, and semicircular, set low on the sides of the head,
and pointing back toward the body, maintaining a picture of balance, while
ideally being placed as low as possible on the head.

Faults: Creases or folds; pointing down, so as to give an oblong or tubular shape, pointed edges, set too high or too low.

Coats

Picture
Standard: Fur to be dense, even, and lustrous – should lay flat and smooth. Long guard hairs or slightly coarser fur are permissible in Males. Whiskers are long and straight. Color and markings should conform to recognized standard.

Picture
Hairless: Hairless rats should have a thin, bright, rather translucent skin, free of scars or pimples, and be as hairless as possible. The skin may be of any color or recognized marking, and wrinkling should not be penalized. The eyes may be of any color, but should be bright and free from any problems. The ears should be very large and wrinkle free. The whiskers may be very short or missing; they are usually curly.

Colors and Color Points

Picture
Siamese: Body color to be ivory to medium beige depending on the color point variety. Color to be gradually and evenly shaded over the head, shoulders, back and belly of the rat. Points to be dark as possible - shaded evenly into the body color and located on the nose but should not extend past the eyes, on the ears but not extending past the ears, on all four feet but not extending past the legs, and the base of the tail shading up over the hindquarters.

Faults: Patchy or uneven coloration, pale or light areas

Eyes: Red to Ruby or Black

Currently working on: I am trying to breed out the top ears and markings. right now the line carries a few markings.

Picture
Picture
Self: Rat shall be all one color displaying no markings.

Faults: White fur on body, white toes/feet

Currently: I am breeding for Mink, Pearl, and Fawn  Self Colors.
Picture
MINK - To be an even mid gray-brown devoid of dinginess, silvering or patches, and having a distinct bluish sheen. Foot color to match top color. Eyes black. (English, N.F.R.S.)

Note: Mink and Lilac look similar (just selected for different shades) and work the same in producing other colors but are not the same gene

MERLE - Merle rats may be shown in any recognized color. The unique feature is a pattern of dark splash-spots distributed evenly throughout the entire lighter background color so as to resemble a merle dog. The splash-spots should be numerous and distinct. Splash-spots will be less prominent on a non-silvered background color. Eye color to correspond to the body color.

PEARL -  To be palest silver, shading to creamish undercolour. Each hair to be delicately tipped with grey evenly over the whole animal. Belly fur pale silver grey. Foot colour to match top. Eyes black.

Currently working on: Breeding for the darkest Mink Possible as This is also a Merle Line. I am also trying to breed out the markings in both Minks and Pearls

Fawn: *working on second generation*
